About the museum

Who we are, why the museum exists and what we preserve.

The Victory Museum and Liberation of Dalmatia in the Second World War is a small town museum on the ground floor of a Renaissance palace in Šibenik's old town. Its task is to preserve the memory of the organised resistance of Dalmatia's people and of the decisions that permanently returned Dalmatia and its islands to Croatia.

Why the museum was opened

It was ceremonially opened in November 2016 on the occasion of the 72nd anniversary of the liberation of Šibenik from fascist and Nazi occupation, and it operates within the Association of Anti-Fascist Fighters and Anti-Fascists of the Šibenik-Knin County (ZUABA Šibensko-kninske županije).

Although housed in modest premises, it uses a modern and interactive approach to tell a larger story: the organised resistance of Dalmatia's people against the occupier in the Second World War, with emphasis on the offensive of the Eighth Dalmatian Corps for the liberation of Dalmatia. That victory made the historical decisions of ZAVNOH on the permanent return of Dalmatia and the islands to Croatia a reality, a decisive step towards the territorial integrity of Croatia within today's borders.

Who runs it

The museum is not an independent institution: it is founded and run by ZUABA Šibensko-kninske županije, the umbrella organisation of anti-fascist fighters' associations, their descendants and anti-fascists in the Šibenik-Knin County. That is why the museum lives on volunteering, on conversations with witnesses and on material collected by member associations and families.
